Recent History	As recently as 2001 City found themselves relegated from the top flight. Kevin Keegan began a fight back that resulted in the team winning the Division One Championship in 2001/02. In 2007 Thaksin Shinawatra took over, but his reign was cut short in 2008, his assets frozen due to his political background. Enter the big spending Abu Dhabi United Group and an influx of players the likes of which Manchester City had never seen before. In 2009 the club spent over £100 million on new players. Mark Hughes was replaced by Roberto Mancini. Investment in the team continued over the coming years. 2011 saw City finally win a trophy, the FA Cup. The following season City won the Premier League in the most dramatic fashion with 2 goals against QPR in injury time. That win marked a change in the Premier League hierarchy and since then City have been there or thereabouts when it comes to English football's greatest prize. Another League title followed under Manuel Pellegrini and in 2016 Pep Guardiola took over. Premier League titles followed in 2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & the treble (Premier League, FA Cup & Champions League) in 2022/23.

After a slow start to the 2023/24 campaign, Manchester City won 18 – including a run of nine victories in a row - and drew three of their final 21 Premier League matches to clinch an unprecedented fourth consecutive league title. Erling Haaland has been named top scorer of the league in two straight seasons, having netted a combined 63 goals. Meanwhile, their main weakness is the way the team copes with Rodri’s absence whenever the Spain international is unavailable, as in four games without him on the pitch last season, Man City recorded three defeats.
