Stadium | Old Trafford (opened 1910) Capacity: 74,879 Pitch Size: 105m x 68m Manchester United have been steadily improving Old Trafford since the war when the original stadium was bombed. The stadium re-opened in 1949 after a 10 year period where they couldn't play games at the ground. In subsequent years a roof would be added & stands rebuilt. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s the stadium was improved yet further and the word is that they club intend to take the capacity to close to 90,000 in the future. |
Recent History | Manchester United are commonly regarded as one of, if not the biggest football clubs in the world. After a period of disappointment, Alex Ferguson arrived at Old Trafford and set about building a period of unrivalled success in English football. In 1990 Ferguson won the FA Cup with United following a replay against Crystal Palace. The word is that had he lost that game, the Scotsman would have been dismissed. That success was followed by the Cup Winners Cup. In 98/99 United won the treble (Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup). Prior to that they won the title in the inaugural Premier League trophy in 1992/93. They followed that with titles in 1993/94, 1995/96, 1996/97, 1999/2000, 2000/2001, 2002/2003, 2006/2007, 2008/2009, 2010/2011 & 2012/2013. Further trophies would come in the shape of the Champions League (2007/08), FA Cup (1995/96 & 2003/04), League Cup (1991/92, 2005/06, 2008/09 & 2009/10), Intercontinental Cup (1999), FIFA Club World Cup (2008) & the European Super Cup (1991). Needless to say that the post Ferguson era has not delivered on the same scale. Failed managers have included David Moyes, Van Gaal (despite an FA Cup win) & Mourinho (albeit winning the League Cup & the Europa League), Ole Gunnar Solskjær & Ralf Rangnick. Will the Erik ten Hag era prove more successful? |
