Stadium | Between 1950 and 2015 Olympique Lyonnais played their home games in Stade de Gerland, a multi-sport complex inaugurated in 1926. The stadium underwent several renovations over the years. In the late 1960s it had the bicycle track surrounding the pitch removed in order to increase its capacity to 50,000. New works took place in 1984 for the European Championship and in 1998 for the World Cup when the capacity was reduced to 36,000. During the time the pitch remained a permanent feature, never being relaid. It was only in 2007 that a new playing surface was brought in from Portugal. In January 2016, Olympique Lyonnais made their debut at their new home, the Stade des Lumières. A modern venue it was built complete with a museum, sports centre, shopping centre and an entertainment complex. The new stadium belongs to the club and it was given a 4 rating in terms of UEFA Stadium Classification. With a capacity of 59,000, it hosted the Europa League final in 2017-2018. |
Recent History | Founded in 1950, Olympique Lyonnais obtained won their first trophy in 1964, lifting the Coupe de France. The following season they reached the Cup Winners’ Cup semifinal. They would win the Coupe de France twice more between the end of the 1960s and the early 1970s. Lyon were met with a financial crisis after that and dropped down to the 2nd tier in 1982-1983. That relegation came after 29 consecutive campaigns in the top flight. The club was then bought by the industrialist Jean-Michel Aulas in 1987, who started a slow but steady revolution. His changes saw Olympique return to Ligue 1. Between 2001 and 2008, they won 7 titles in a row, something which no other club had done before. They also won their 4th Coupe de France. The following decade saw a period of relative decline, but Lyon made it to the semifinals of the Champions League in 2009-2010 and also the Europa League in 2016-2017. Domestically they had to content themselves with a 5th Coupe de France in 2012 and 3 second placed finishes in 2009-2010, 2014-2015 and 2015-2016. |
