Stadium | Paris Saint Germain were founded in 1970. They played their first home games in the Stade Georges-Lefèvre which had a capacity of 4,500. For their first campaign in Division 1 in 1971-1972, they moved to the Stade de Paris, commonly known as Stade Bauer, which could host more than 23,000. They briefly returned to Stade Georges-Lefèvre until 1974 when they found a new home in the Parc des Princes. Originally inaugurated in 1897, Parc de Princes was frequently renovated over time and it was considered the most important French stadium between 1972 and 1998 as amongst other things it hosted games played by the French National team. While it is without question one of the oldest stadiums in the country, Parc des Princes is now only 5th in terms of capacity. Renovated for the European Championship in 2016, the Parc could host 48,500. New works are due to take place and will lead to a further increase in capacity to 60,000. This development will be completed in time for the Olympic Games in 2024. Since 2014 and based on an agreement for 30 years, the Stadium is under control of the Qatar Sports Investments Fund that owns Paris Saint Germain. |
Recent History | Despite a short history and only winning their first silverware (Coupe de France) in the early 1980s, Paris Saint Germain are one of the most successful clubs in the country. They have won 8 French titles, 12 Coupe de France, 8 Coupe de la Ligue and 9 Trophée des Champions. At a European level, they won the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1995-1996, while losing the subsequent final. They reached the Champions League semifinals in 1994-1995 and the UEFA Cup semifinals in 1992-1993. Owned by Canal+, they were most successful between 1991 and 1998, under Denisot’s presidency, but a slow decline began once he passed the club on to Charles Biètry. Things went from bad to worse in 2006 when Canal+ sold the club to the American investment fund Colony Capital. During that period Paris Saint Germain only managed to win a Coupe de France in 2010. In 2011 the club was bought by the Qatar Investment Authority fund and with that they became a French footballing super-power. They have won everything domestically including the quadruple (Ligue 1, Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue and Trophée des Champions) some 3 times in 2015, 2016 and 2018. Crucially they have failed to reach the same heights in Europe and it will be at this level that PSG will continue to be judged. This is particularly the case given the amounts invested in the club and the players that they have at their disposal. |
