Stadium | Founded in 1913, Parma played their first home games in the Piazza d’Armi. By 1923 they had moved to the Stadio Comunale. This arena was later called the Stadio Ennio Tardini after the former President of the club. The Tardini, the third oldest Stadium in Italy is characterised by an entrance with an Art Nouveau triumphal arch. During the 1960s and 1970s, the Stadium underwent redevelopment. The wooden stands were replaced by structures made of concrete and a roof was also added in some areas. After Parma’s first promotion to Serie A in 1990, it was decided that a far reaching rebuild was needed. As such amongst other things, the layout of the Tardini was changed from oval to rectangular. In the summer of 2018, again to coincide with a top flight promotion, the pitch was relaid and new seats were installed reducing the capacity to 22,352 viewers. |
Recent History | Gaining promotion to Serie A in 1990, Parma immediately left a mark establishing themselves among the protagonists of top flight Italian football. In what was a glorious decade, they managed to win 3 Coppa Italias, 1 Italian Super Cup, 2 UEFA Cups, 1 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and 1 European Super Cup. As well as that they found themselves as regular challengers for the Scudetto. The club were part of the Parmalat empire and risked financial collapse when the food giant went bankrupt in 2004. Having gone close the failing as a business, Parma found themselves having to come to terms with a new reality on the pitch. Instead of fighting for silverware their new world was one of avoiding relegation. In 2007-2008 they succumbed to the drop, but to their credit were immediately promoted back to Serie A. After 5 mid-table campaigns, they qualified for the Europa League again but they were not granted a UEFA licence to play in the tournament. Things got even worse for Parma the following season (2014-2015) as they went bankrupt and were no longer permitted to participate in professional football. Re-born with a new name and owned by an Italian-Chinese joint venture, Parma climbed back up the leagues from Serie D. In just 4 years they were a Serie A club once more! |
