Stadium | Stade Rennais played their early home matches in a field on the south bank of the river Vilaine. The club made some valiant attempts to make the venue suitable for players and fans alike, but eventually they had to come to terms with the fact that regular flooding of the playing surface during winter months meant it wasn't viable in the long term. In 1912 they moved to a park on the opposite bank of the river, on the road to Lorient. The Parc des sports de la route de Lorient, or Parc des sports du Moulin du Comte had a main wooden grandstand and some terraces. Just prior to World War II the local authority of Rennes financed a major redevelopment. This included the building of changing rooms, the partial coverage of the stands and new terraces behind the goals. Further improvements took place between 1955 and 1957 and in 1987, but several projects aiming at its reconstruction were ultimately abandoned due to poor results on the pitch. Major works eventually took place between 1999 and 2004 with capacity increased to 29,000. As of June 2015 the stadium was renamed Roazhon Park after the Breton name of the city of Rennes. |
Recent History | Stade Rennais went close winning trophies early on in their history, losing the Coupe de France final twice, in 1922 and 1935. They gained professional status in 1932-1933, but it would take the some time to build on that early progress. They won the Coupe twice in 1964-1965 and in 1970-1971. With those successes came their first taste of European action. Between the late 1970s and the mid-1990s Stade Rennais spent most of their time in the 2nd tier, indeed time in the top flight never lasted more than 2 consecutive campaigns. Their existence between the first and the second tiers of French football came to an end in 1994-1995 as they became long term participants in Ligue 1. In the 25 campaigns that followed, Stade Rennais found themselves out of the top 10 only 8 times. They achieved their best results in 2004-2005 and in 2006-2007 when they finished 4th. In 2018-2019 won their first silverware after a 36-year drought, beating the mighty Paris Saint Germain in the Coupe de France final. |
