Stadium | Union Berlin is a unique club and their stadium is a unique stadium. The ground is called Stadion An der Alten Försterei, which in English means Stadium at the Old Forester's House and that’s because it is literally located in the middle of a forest in south-east Berlin. This has been the club’s home since 1920, but there was a major refurbishment carried out in 2009 as fans helped to rebuild the stadium so that it would meet the requirements for promotion to Bundesliga 2. The capacity is 22,000 and four-fifths of this is standing only. With most of the stadium on its feet on a match day, this creates a really unique and boisterous atmosphere. |
Recent History | The 2019/20 season is Union Berlin’s first ever campaign in the Bundesliga. They have played at lower levels for most of their history, before establishing themselves as a second-tier side with 10 consecutive seasons in Bundesliga 2 between 2009 and 2019, after which they won promotion in a play-off against Stuttgart. Before that, their biggest footballing success had been reaching the DFB-Pokal final in 2001 even though they were in the third tier. They lost, but that still qualified them for the UEFA Cup. |
