Stadium | The city of Wolfsburg is the home to Volkswagen AG's headquarters and little else apart from the football club, which is owned by the company. It is one of the smallest cities in Germany, yet it has the 30,000-capacity Volkswagen Arena located there. Given how few people live there and given that many of them have moved from other parts of Germany with other footballing allegiances, this is always one of the stadiums with the greatest percentage of empty seats. Opened in 2002, this two-tier stadium is very modern and very comfortable. When it is full, the characteristics of the ground can make for a good atmosphere, but the problem is that it is rarely full. |
Recent History | It took until 1997 for Wolfsburg to reach the Bundesliga. But, once they did, they never went back down. They have remained a permanent fixture in the German top flight since their promotion, sometimes fighting relegation, sometimes qualifying for Europe and, in one very memorable season, winning the Bundesliga in 2008/09. They have done a very good job at bringing through players, especially considering there isn’t much in the way of a local population. The club opened a new academy in 2008 and have attracted top talents from around the country, regularly winning titles at underage levels and bringing through players for their team and to be sold on. |
