Boavista were close to getting relegated last season, and many thanks to a disastrous sequence of scores and performances while Petit was at the helm. Boavista lost their home edge when compared to the previous campaign, and were hardly ever getting points in the first half of the season. Eventually, the board replaced him by also former team’s iconic player Erwin Sanchez and the Bolivian gave the team a bit more of organization. The Axadrezados were still not impressing with their football, but at least started to collect some more points and eventually got away from the relegation zone near the end. Ruben Ribeiro was arguably last season’s best player, and is gone now to join Rio Ave, and important attacker Zé Manel will be joining Setúbal. Boavista signed mainly with some players unknown to the Portuguese league, and they will heavily depend on the quality of a couple of them, at least, if they want to stay competitive. Former Moreirense attacking midfielder Fábio Espinho will be one of the few known faces joining in and might be one of the biggest hopes for Axadrezados to give some quality into the game play of the team.

Target


The target for Axadrezados will be very simple: be around top flight teams in one year from now. Getting anything higher than relegation avoidance in the last rounds should be considered a bonus. In the meanwhile, Boavista might consider improving the overall quality of their game style and provide attacking football, at least when at home, so fans can relate and enjoy supporting the team once again.
