Last season was a disappointing one for Cagliari as they started the campaign with high expectations, but eventually had to content themselves with avoiding relegation. This seems to have become a constant for the Sardinians over the last few years, ever since being acquired by hyper-ambitious Giulini. The President felt compelled to confirm Semplici at the helm, although there seems to have been a reluctance about this decision. To his credit the coach managed to transform the team from a tub into an Armada capable of winning impossible games. During the summer, Cagliari once again saw a great number of players leaving, mostly due to the end of loans from bigger clubs. Among them, the main departure is certainly represented by versatile midfielder Nainggolan, who actually failed to leave a mark last season. The Belgian, who is highly regarded in Sardinia could return as he has no future at Inter. Starting centre-back Rugani returns to Juventus while inconsistent winger Sottil, who at times looked very bright, returns to Fiorentina. On the other hand, the likes of Klavan, Asamoah and, to a lesser extent Duncan will not be missed. With Rog injured for a long time and Nandez with his mind elsewhere, the midfield is the department mostly in need of investments. The excellent hiring of Strootman only partly solves their problems: more muscles and creativity will be needed if they aim to be truly competitive. At the back, young Carboni could make a step up and turn into a regular but, with Godin also on the departure list, an experienced signing if not two, would be required. The attack is also a bit of a puzzle: if Simeone, disappointing last season, and Joao Paulo, always outstanding, remained they would be all set for the season. On the other hand, their departure would leave them in big trouble.

Target

Cagliari are still a work in progress and their future will depend on what players coach Semplici will be able to count on, come September. Salvation seems to be their target at the moment.
