It was a nightmare season for Reading last season with points deductions and a crippling injury list to deal with but they managed to survive, just. Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince was appointed manager in February, he steadied the ship after a losing run and led the Royals to safety. It has been a frustrating summer so far for Ince. With the club under a transfer embargo, all deals must be ratified by the EFL and they can only sign free agents or complete loan deals. They have managed to bring in experienced Championship performers Tom Ince, who impressed during loan spell at Royals last season, and Hendrick. More astute incomings are needed due to the loss of several of Reading’s key performers from last season. Ever-present Laurent and fellow valuable central midfielders Rinomhota and Drinkwater have departed along with experienced defender and captain Morrison. Key attacking midfielder Swift (11 goals and 13 assists in 2021/22) has also moved on to pastures new. Main striker Lucas Joao remains at the club for now but has been strongly linked with a move away. It looks like being another difficult season for Reading. They will need to make a raft of new signings with Ince using all his contacts and experience if they are going to be anywhere near competitive this season.

Target

Survival looks to be the main aim. Ince has a tough job on his hands.
