Stadium | Amiens played at a variety of locations in their early years, including the Velodrome in Boulevard de Châteaudun. They moved to a dedicated football Stadium in Rue Henry Daussy in 1909. The venue had a capacity of 1,000 and boasted a single grandstand with pitch surrounded by an athletics track. During World War I, the stadium was used by the British Army for logistical reasons forcing the team to play in a nearby field. In 1921 Amiens moved to Rue Louis Thuillier. The stadium had a covered grandstand for 500 seated fans. In 1931 the venue was renamed Stade Moulonguet, the name of the former President of the club. Its capacity was subsequently increased to 1,700 seats and Amiens would play there until 1999 when the Stade de La Licorne was inaugurated. La Licorne has a capacity of 12,000 and is characterised by a high structure in sheer glass. In 2016 this was redeveloped together with a roof. For safety issues Amiens had to return to Stade Moulonguet for a short period. |
Recent History | After spending several decades in the lower tiers of the French football, Amiens made it back amongst the professionals as recently as 1991 when they were promoted to Ligue 2. Between then and 2009, they spent two seasons back in the Championnat National, in 1993-1994 and 2000-2001. In 2000-2001 Amiens made it to the final of the Coupe de France where they faced Racing Strasbourg. They were only the 3rd team from the Championnat National to have achieved this feat. After 120 scoreless minutes they succumbed in a penalty shootout. In 2007-2008, they made the semifinals of the competition this time losing to Paris Saint Germain. In 2009-2010 Amiens dropped back into the Championnat National and remained in that division for the following 5 years. Their fortunes changed when Christophe Pellissier took charge, guiding them to Ligue 2 in 2015-2016 and then Ligue 1 the following campaign. After surviving for 2 seasons in a row in the top flight, Pellissier left for pastures new. Permanence in Ligue 1 remains their main goal. |
