Stadium | The Benteler-Arena is the smallest stadium in the Bundesliga, with its capacity of 15,000. It is fairly modern, having been built in 2008, but it was designed for a lower league team and not for Bundesliga football. It feels like a classic small club stadium, with just one single tier. The high and large roof, however, does do a good job for the acoustics and it can lead to a good atmosphere when full, especially as fans are so close to the pitch. |
Recent History | Paderborn are the smallest club in the Bundesliga and the smallest to reach that level in some time. They only reached the German top tier for the first time in 2014, and then suffered a dramatic fall as they finished bottom of the top tier in 2014/15 and then bottom of the second tier in 2015/16. Under coach Steffen Baumgart, they were able to recover. After another poor season in the third tier, they then responded to their back-to-back relegations with back-to-back promotions in 2017/18 and 2018/19 to once again take their place in the Bundesliga. As such a small club, the academy is quite small too and it’s tough for Paderborn to produce players who are ready for the highest level. As such, they have to sign lots of journeyman players each year and this has mixed results. |
