Football Season Review

№23: Atlanta United

Two years ago Atlanta were on top of MLS and their fans were celebrating. This season was a disaster though and it could have been seen coming even from the early stages when it was realised that Josef Martinez would have been out for the whole season. Moreover, the second best player of the team, the other Martinez, "Pity", was transferred and played only 7 matches with United this season. Erick Torres and Marcelino Moreno, who were the new additions to help replacing these superstars, couldn't contribute immediately on the same pace and that left the midfield and the attack to be a lot weakened comparing to previous seasons. The defensive organisation of the team, despite being criticised due to the bad results, did the job pretty well considering the pressure they were receiving in each match as they conceded 30 goals in 23 matches, a figure better than those of many playoff teams. In general, we could say that 2020 was disastrous for Atlanta but, as there are quality players and Josef Martinez will return healthy and will help the team's attack, there's not many things to improve in order to create a solid playoff-caliber team which will be able for a nice run next season.
