Football Season Review

№7: New York City FC

New York City FC endured the worst campaign since their inaugural season as they finished fifth in the Eastern Conference before being dumped out of the playoffs in the first round. Ronny Deila's first season in charge of the club began on a poor note with New York suffering six defeats from their opening eight games, including the MLS is Back tournament. They did hit good form once the regular season resumed but, despite a consistent run of form, they were struggling to close the gap to the top form and a four-match winning run to wrap up the regular season was not enough as they finished fifth in the Eastern Conference. New York struggled up front with none of the players managing to reach the double figures on the goals chart, though they were not helped by injuries to first choice striker Heber, but a tight defense proved to be the foundation on a fairly decent campaign. However it was not enough to prevent an early exit from the playoffs with New York losing on penalties to Orlando City after having been held to a 1-1 draw. New York clearly underperformed this season and will need to improve, especially in the attack, if they are to ensure a better campaign next year
