Football Season Review

№16: Caykur Rize

Although Caykur Rize collected the same amount of points as in the previous two seasons, it was not enough for them to survive this time out. It was a tough season for the Black Sea Region side. The fans offered reactions to the coach and the board during the whole season because they understood that their team were going to be in the middle of the survival fight, if nothing was done as soon as possible. They called for coach Hikmet Karaman's resignation many times but nothing was done. Despite the league failure, they could have done a great job in the cup but it was ignored in order to save their energy for the league. When they entered into the winter break, the coach asked for some transfers but the club were not able to do what the coach wanted because of the financial situation. The whole club were also shocked when they heard about the accident of Kweuke’s wife. She was pregnant with twins. Unfortunately, the unborn twins passed away. It made the whole team lose their morale. No doubt that Kweuke faced the biggest sadness. Because of that, his performance was very bad for a while. Considering that he was the heart of the team’s offensive plans, they really struggled in some fixtures. The defence line’s performance was also very disappointing. They could record only five clean sheets. Their lack of depth in the backline seems the biggest reason for that. Their home performance was also one of the worst in the league. They were unable to defeat some direct rivals at home. If they manage to save the main structure of the team and add some useful players to the defence and the midfield, they can return to the top level quickly.

Player of the Season: Leonard Kweuke
