Football Season Review

№17: Gaziantepspor

Unfortunately for them, Gaziantep had to end their twenty-seven year Super League adventure. In fact, it was not a surprise because they had completed two of the previous three seasons close to the relegation zone. So there had been some bad signals for them but the board could not heed them. The fans are very angry with the club president’s policies. Ismail Kartal was appointed as the coach before the season although he had not been successful in his career so far. It was clear when the team were standing on the border of the relegation zone after 14 fixtures. Of course, the quality of the squad was also too low. Following the departure of keeper Karcemarkas, a good replacement was not signed in. Every department of the team was not satisfactory in general. Even when the board appointed coach Ibrahim Uzulmez, they could not get any point in three games with him. The squad quality and the president’s wrong choices are not the solereasons of their failure. Due to the geographical location, Gaziantep are a dangerous city. They were affected badly from terrorism. Because of that, they did not add some players who could have been very useful to them. The suicide of Rajtoral hurt them a lot too. It was almost impossible to make the team get out of such a deep mood. Coach Bulent Uygun was appointed for the second period of the season. He was the last chance for them to survive. Although they did well with him on the early fixtures, they failed to record a steady run. On the late fixtures, some players, who lost their faith on survival, started to leave the team by pleading the unpaid wages. From that moment, it became impossible for them to reach the safe zone. Former La Liga player Nabil Ghilas was the sole man who did his best with 8 goals & 4 assists. Except him, no player deserves to be applauded.
