Football Season Review

№8: Genclerbirligi

Genclerbirligi managed to stretch the recent seasons’ success and completed the last season in the eighth place. Although they made a good start with coach Ibrahim Uzulmez, the board had to part company with him after the team collected only one point in four fixtures. In his stead, a very familiar coach was appointed. The arrival of Umit Ozat, who was a former player of the capital city side, showed its positive effect in a short time and they tasted their first away fixture of the season. Following that, they remained unbeaten at home for ten fixtures but they were unable to get any point for six trips. During the season, fourty-year president Ilhan Cavcav passed away. They struggled to bounce back for a while following his death. The coach managed to keep this process short with his experience. The defence line did a great job and became one of the best five defensive performers in the league. At this point, keeper Johannes Hopf contributed to his team a lot with his saves. On the other hand, they were one of the lowest goal scoring teams in the league along with two of the relegated ones. Winger Serdar Gurler’s performance was really impressive. Considering that the capital city side were unable to get efficiency from his attackers, his 17 goals were very decisive for the team. Besides him, the performances of Aydin Karabulut, Abdul Khalili and Selcuk Sahin were notable during the season. It cannot be said that the transfer policy of the team was right in the last season because some foreign players disappointed with their performances. For the next season, they should improve their offence line in the summer and try to keep the important figures of the team as there are already some offers.
