Shane Sutherland’s departure for neighbours Inverness Caledonian Thistle has been known for months but still represents a significant blow for Elgin City. Sutherland has been the go-to man for goals over the last decade but opted for a move up the leagues in January. At the time of writing, Joel Macbeath and the experienced Josh Peters have been signed as replacements but they both face an unenviable task of replacing all of those goals. Meanwhile, manager Gavin Price is finally starting to get to grips with the job at Borough Briggs. One of his priorities was to remedy a sieve-like defence and they had certainly improved before last season’s cancellation due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Highlanders were in the play-offs at the time and they will be looking to repeat the feat this time around. Full-back Archie MacPhee’s return on loan was a plus and it remains to be seen if that move will be made permanent. Key to any success will be Club stalwart Brian Cameron. The midfield playmaker will start his 13th season with the Highlanders and is integral to the team. Price could still do with a couple more additions to his small squad before the transfer window shuts and they are likely to come in the shape of loans.

Target

Play-offs. Last season’s improvement showed they can challenge for the top four but they will need to recover from the loss of Sutherland.
