Jahn Regensburg were promoted last season after one of the more dramatic play-off matches that the second division will ever see. The Bavarian side looked completely out-gunned against the squad of stars that 1860 München had assembled but the underdogs took the day and continued their remarkable rise up the league tree. In the 2014/15 season, the squad were relegated to the Bavarian regional league as the worst team in the league. Two successive promotions later they are back in the second division for only the third season in their history. Much of their success came down to the coaching of Heiko Herrlich who, in just two seasons in charge, has been responsible for a complete change in the club's fortunes. Herrlich has now moved on to manage Bayer Leverkusen and Achim Beierlorzer has taken over. He was most recently in charge of RB Leipzig’s U19 side. There is therefore a real danger that all the progress made under Herrlich will be lost as a new man in charge often means a difference in mentality and playing style. Most certainly the Regensburg side who will take to the field will be made up of a lot of players who have yet to feature at such a high level and that lack of experience will need to be quickly accounted for. The majority of signings made by the club have come from youth sides and second teams in Germany and overall Regensburg can be considered the biggest outsiders in the league to stay up.

Target

Jahn Regensburg will aim to avoid relegation this season after their unlikely play-off victory last term.
