Football Season Guide

Waasland-Beveren had very difficult last season and up until 31st July they didn’t know in which division they will play. The Lions struggled for goals and wins big time in 2019/20, which culminated in them dropping in last place in the last round played. However, relegation was far from certain as the season was abandoned with 1 game left and after winning 3 successful court trials against the Federation Waasland-Beveren finally found out last Friday that they will stay in the top flight for the new campaign. With no certainty what was going to happen the team’s transfer approach had been very reserve up to now, but with the transfer window open up until October there is time for many reinforcements to be signed. It can be expected at least 10-12 new faces to join the squad in coming weeks. This means that right now not much attention should be paid on the confirmed transfers. In the off-season appointed Nicky Hayen as their new head coach, with this to be his first ever experience as main manager of a top flight squad. He spent the last 3 seasons as assistant coach at Sint-Truiden. The squad is very small right now, which suggests that at least the first few rounds will be difficult. Obvious bonus the fact that 7 of the regulars from last season are still in the group and they will be mainly relied upon for now. With not much money in the bank and surrounded by uncertainty up until the final week before the season started it would be surprise if Waasland-Beveren look properly prepared in the first few months.
