Stadium | Barcelona’s stadium is the famous Camp Nou, opened in 1957. With a capacity of just over 99,000, it is the largest stadium in Europe and has always given Barcelona a huge home advantage. Even though it has almost 100,000 seats, the away section remains tiny and the ground is almost exclusively filled with Barcelona fans on matchdays – except in UEFA matches when regulations require them to give more tickets to visiting supporters. Barcelona, one of four clubs in Spanish professional football that is still considered a sports club and that is, therefore, in the control of the fans, are currently redeveloping their stadium, having taken on a project to slightly increase the capacity and to improve the overall facilities. They’ll even add a roof around the whole ground, as there is currently only one stand that is covered. |
Recent History | While Barcelona have always been one of the top clubs in Spain and in Europe, they’ve reached another level since the emergence of Lionel Messi in 2005. The current captain has broken almost every record imaginable and has led the team to domestic title after domestic title. In Europe, Barcelona haven’t been quite as dominant and have only won four Champions League titles during the Messi era, the most recent coming in 2014/15. Since then, they have suffered some really heart-breaking comeback losses on the continent against Roma and Liverpool. |
