Stadium | The Opel Arena is one of the newest stadiums in Germany and Europe, opened in 2011. It replaced the old Bruchwegstadion, requiring a move across the city of a few kilometres. It is still in a very accessible location. The current stadium boasts a capacity of 34,000 and is made up of four steep stands that each have a unique character. The stands are also very tight and close to the pitch, contributing to the atmosphere. |
Recent History | Although Mainz 05 were in the top tier of competition the year before the founding of the Bundesliga, they weren’t involved in the first season of the Bundesliga in 1963 and never reached the promised land of the top tier until several decades later. It was only in 2004, with a young Jürgen Klopp as coach, that they finally rose to the Bundesliga. They fell back down once, but Mainz 05 have been an established mid-table club in recent years. They’ve been in the top division since 2009 and their average position since then has been ninth, right in the middle of the standings. With a really good academy and with other good coaches such as Thomas Tuchel and Martin Schmidt, this club has been able to punch above its weight in recent years to the point where they’re no longer really considered underdogs. |
