Football Season Review

№15: Goztepe

It was really a tough season for Goztepe. They kicked off the last season badly, but then they managed to bounce back and found themselves close to the European Cups spots. Then they suddenly collapsed because of injured players and a short squad. A run of 9-point in 18 fixtures made them stand in the relegation zone. During this period, the whole club lived very stressful days. The board had to change the bench twice in order to end their terrible run. Some players had a fight with the fans outside the stadium after they suffered a narrow defeat at home against the survival contenders Akhisar. Because of the board’s attitude on this incident, the fans reacted against them. Besides those, the team could not get expected performances from some players including Serdar Gurler, Castro and Ghilas. The experienced Yasin Oztekin, who produced 8 goals & 3 assists, has become the best performer of the team although this was not former Galatasaray winger’s best in career. As usual, their away performance was very bad as they could collect only 11 points in 17 trips, which was the worst following Akhisar. The offence line was not also trustable during the whole season as they failed to score in 15 fixtures. However, the defence line must be be plauded as they offered one of the top 5 defensive performances. Although they were unable to use Traore for a long time, Berkan Emir & Lumor have tried their best on the left. 36-year old keeper Beto has done a great job again since his arrival in Goztepe in 2017. The fans believe that this season was a big lesson to them as the club president agreed that. So they need to bring some fresh blood in the summer and build a wide range squad in order not to have any nightmares again.
