Football Season Review

№4: Trabzonspor

No doubt that Trabzon could have finished the season in a better place considering they ended with a 12-game undefeated league run, but they lacked consistency in the season’s 1st period. The biggest reason of that was the unrest inside the squad. Some players were not happy with the team’s financial situations and it affected their performance. In order to solve it, the board took some important decisions and parted company with those players including Onur Kivrak who had been playing in Trabzon for a long time. Following that, it took a while for coach Unal Karaman to find the rhytm, but they managed to do it. Their early cup exit enabled them to concentrate all their energy on the league. At this point, the coach decided to give more chances to young players like Huseyin Turkmen, Abdulkadir Parmak and Ugurcan Cakir. Of course, the coach could do it after seeing some impressive performances from the youth academy products Yusuf Yazici & Abdulkadir Omur. Because of their financial situation, they were unable to add their favourite players during the past summer. That is why they lacked quality in their foreign player quota. Since they failed to meet the FFP criteria, they will not be able to do what they desire in the summer transfer market. At this point, coach Unal Karaman, whose contract was renewed for 2 years, is hopeful to keep the current quality, but it will not be easy as there are already some interests on talented players. Therefore, the club face a dilemma: improving the finances despite losing quality or retaining the squad’s strength for the title?
