Almere City start the season once again aspiring to finally break the glass ceiling and gain promotion, having been to the play-offs in every season since 2014. Last year, they were not really good enough to get the job done and eventually suffered a heavy 4:0 loss to NEC Nijmegen in the first play-off game, ending a season that saw coach Ole Tobiasen sacked in March. Now the Black Sheep from the outskirts of Amsterdam are making a swing for the fences by hiring a renowned coach with pedigree like Gertjan Verbeek. The former AZ and Feyenoord coach is well known for his disciplinarian methods and fiery character but he has improved teams everywhere he has been and can certainly make Almere get over the hump and secure promotion. Almere saw important players like Thomas Veheydt and Damion Mirani depart but the new additions look pretty impressive too, among them defender Ramon Leeuwin and striker Jonas Arweiler. Another interesting addition is Lance Duijvestijn, who bagged 11 goals from midfield for Helmond Sport last season. The likes of Ryan Koolwijk, Fredrik Helstrup and Jorrit Smeets provide a great spine to the team through the middle and Almere will certainly be tough to play against this season. This squad certainly looks like it has potential and if they catch fire early in the season they are likely to be in the mix for automatic promotion. Yet a spot between fourth and eighth is more likely to be their final position, given that they have a few limitations in the final third.

Target

Will push hard for promotion and a play-off spot looks well within their grasp.
