Bielefeld had quite a season last time out under coach Mitch Kniat, winning the Liga 3 title and reaching a first ever DFB Pokal final. The Blues grew in strength as the season progressed and won 12 of their last 15 matches. The club are finally on the way back up after their descent from the top-flight to the third-tier in recent years, and keeping Kniat in charge for the upcoming season is likely to be pivotal in continuing their upward trajectory. In order to compete in the division, Bielefeld needed a few additions during the summer transfer window. Marvin Mehlem is certainly the pick of the bunch, having been a key player in this division before with Darmstadt and Paderborn. The loss of midfielder Worl and left-back Oppie is disappointing with the pair being standout performers last season, but the rest of the regulars remain for now. Handwerker is a solid and experienced addition while young winger Boakye is an exciting prospect from Stuttgart U23’s. Other young loan signings Micheler and Norbye will also be looking to take their chances. More strength in depth may be needed before the window shuts but Bielefeld have the capabilities to compete, especially at home with a passionate support. The team was built on defensive strength last season, only conceding 36 times in 38 league games, so expect them to be well organised.

Target

Bielefeld will be looking to carry their momentum through to this season, and there is no reason why they can’t be competitive. Stabilising in the division will be the first aim. Target - 12th to 15th.
