Last season was ultimately a disappointing one for Middlesbrough as they missed out on promotion via the playoffs. Overall, though there were lots of positives for Boro who finished 4th in the league. Michael Carrick was the catalyst for Middlesborough’s success last season after the former Manchester United player was appointed manager back in October. He has now had a full pre-season to prepare and shape his squad. The off season transfer activity has been slightly underwhelming. In terms of outfield players, the policy so far has been bringing in younger players to hopefully challenge the established regulars of last season. A new goalkeeper was needed after Steffen’s loan deal ended and three have been brought in, with Dieng the likely number one choice. Along with Steffen, two other regular starters have left with valuable striker Archer and first choice left-back Giles returning to their parent clubs. Boro hit 84 goals last season, second only to Championship winners Burnley (87). Akpom was the main contributor hitting 28 in the league. There are some doubts surrounding his future at the club and he has been injured during pre-season. Boro have suffered other notable injuries during pre-season with captain Howson and first choice right-back Smith both currently sidelined.

Target

Boro still have a strong squad but as it stands it is difficult to see them improving on last season. Will certainly be chasing a playoff place.
