Following the disappointment of relegation from the Premier League, West Ham owners, David Sullivan and David Sullivan moved fast to assemble a new-look squad and management team to mount an instant return to the top flight. Sam Allardyce accepted the challenge and has taken the Upton Park reins, whilst attracting Newcastle United captain Kevin Nolan and Matthew Taylor - two players Allardyce worked with closely whilst at Bolton. Both signings are massive coups for a Championship side and considering the impact Nolan made on the division last time around with the Magpies it merely shows the ambition and intent to return to the promised land at the first time of asking. The signing of these players on significant wages and lengthy contracts is a hefty financial gamble, particularly if the Hammers fail to secure promotion next May. The players will undoubtedly feel the off-field financial pressure, but Allardyce has a proven track record and will not accept failure. If the Hammers can somehow keep hold of the likes of Scott Parker and Robert Green they should be nailed on for a Championship title tilt.

Target

Appointment of Allardyce as boss and ambitious signings of Nolan and Taylor suggest the Hammers don’t intend on hanging around in the Championship for longer than a season. Automatic promotion.
