A three-year stint in the top-flight came to an end for Heidenheim last season as they succumbed to relegation. They typically went down fighting, but a lack of quality and strength in depth cost them. Head coach Schmidt remains at the helm for the upcoming campaign in what will be his 19th season in charge. Despite some obvious departures the core of the squad remains largely intact, so a complete rebuild in the summer has not been necessary. Heideheim have not gone overboard on transfers. Talented young winger Hennrich has promise after impressing with Hoffenheim reserves while the experienced Costly is another healthy addition to the flanks. Oualid Mhamdi is expected to be starter at right-back but can operate in all positions across the backline. Thomas Dahne has also been brought in as a backup goalkeeper. The most notable departure is midfield maestro Dorsch, but captain Mainka is set to stay at the club which is a big plus. Heidenheim should still be tough opponents for many with enough quality going forward to cause problems. A potential weakness could be in defence where they struggled last season, so this is an area that may need strengthening further.
