The decline of Wolfsburg hit crisis point last season as the club’s 29 year stay in the top-flight came to an end. The appointment of Dieter Hecking in March did bring some improvement, until a disappointing relegation play-off defeat to Paderborn. Big changes have been made in the summer as the Wolves look to rebuild. Hecking has been moved upstairs to Sporting Director while young coach Tobias Strobl will take charge of first-team affairs. An overhaul of the squad has taken shape with 9 new faces joining so far. Attacking trio Reese, Glatzel, and Hornby have the potential to bring plenty of goals after their experience in this division with previous clubs. Young winger Besio is also one to watch. Defender Wahl and midfielder Rexhbecaj are also strong additions to the side, having played in the Bundesliga in recent seasons. Attacking midfielder Damar from Hoffenheim is also expected to make a positive impact. Wolfsburg will be aiming for a swift return to the top-flight and certainly have the quality to do so, a blend of youth and experience and an exciting looking attack will make them dangerous opposition. A possible weakness could be an over-inflated squad, the only notable outgoings so far are Wimmer, Majer, and Wind, so Strobl is likely to push for more departures before the season starts, otherwise keeping everyone happy could be a problem.
