Football Season Guide

It was a season of struggle for Magdeburg last time out, coach Fiedler was shown the door after an awful start before the experienced Sander eventually steadied the ship. Sander and the club have recognised the need for changes in the summer with 9 new faces through the door and 10 departures. Magdeburg did lose two central defenders in Hugonet and Mathisen, but they moved quickly to compensate, MacNulty has played in many leagues in Europe, while Jaeckel is a seasoned professional in German football. Iyoya has also been brought in from Dusseldorf and can play in many positions, Kwarteng returns hoping to rediscover his previous form at the club back in 2022/23, both he and Musel from Essen should add goals from midfield. There are also promising youngsters with Korean wingers Do-young Yoon and Chung-hyun Lee highly rated. Tony Reitz is looking to further his development after impressing for Dortmund reserves while Manthey is another talent which can add height and pace in attack. Magdeburg could spring a surprise or two this season with an experienced boss and plenty of talent on the field, key duo Atik and Zukowski have also committed their futures to the club so this is a big plus. Due to the many changes it could take time for Magdeburg to click fully, there may also be the need to move more fringe players on with a rather large squad still active.
