IFK Gothenburg started 2022 with 3 straight wins, but just as quickly they went 6 matches without a win and were left chasing the leaders. The same pattern continued throughout the season with patches of consistency followed by runs of defeats. They only drew 3 matches across the season and finished with 6 defeats in 9 matches as they slumped to 8th. Head coach Michael Stahre remained but poor results in the Swedish Cup saw him fired a few weeks before the 2023 season begins. Last season's starting goalkeeper Walter Hahn has left for Japanese football. Veteran defender Bjarsmyr has retired and Johansson has gone on loan to Randers. Other notables departing are Thern and attackers Aiesh and Nygaard. A few others have left but none with any experience. Helping to shore up in defence is Seb Ohlsson who returns after after a spell in Germany. Centre-back Hausner can also expect to challenge for a starting place. Gothenburg have gained 2 experienced midfielders with Trondsen and Carlen signing in addition to Hagen. Goalkeeper Benediktsson returns from a loan spell but Pontus Dahlberg is expected to be the 1st choice goalkeeper. There's not been too many significant changes at Gothenburg but the guile of Hosam Aiesh will be missed. They have increased their midfield options but 36-year-old veteran Marcus Berg remains their only striker of note.
