Malmo had a very difficult 2022. The Sky Blues not only failed to defend their title but for the first time in over a decade they finished outside the top 6. Losing 10 of their 30 league games was the worst record in over 25 years as far as Malmo were concerned. The combination of inability to juggle European football with domestic duties, plus the overreaction to sack coach Milojevic as early as July due to an early Champions League exit really caused more harm than good. The Board not only sacked Milojevic too early but they replaced him with what turned out to be a total failure in Age Hareide. His spell in charge only deepened the problems. The one positive thing was that Mallmo won a trophy after all as they lifted the Swedish Cup. Expectedly, sacked Hareide at the end of the season and took from Kalmar Henrik Rydström to be their new coach. This will be a challenge as Rydström has only managed Sirius and Kalmar before, so he’s yet to be tested at the helm of the biggest club in the country. Malmo’s large squad parted ways with some underperforming players in the winter. In terms of new signings not much had been spent. Shopped in the Americas for 3 defenders, also added 2 new wingers in Vecchia and Ali to the fold. Malmo have lots of talent in their ranks and pretty much the 5-6 most important players all stayed put so the Sky Blues will be aiming towards silverware once more. Can Henrik Rydström rise to the challenge of leading them there is another matter? What is certain is that the new gaffer will work for the first time in his career with a squad stuffed of talent, so he will have to be making tough choices and leaving some very good players on the bench at times.
