Football Season Review

Champions: Basaksehir

At last Basaksehir reached the 1st Super League title after finishing the last 5 seasons in the top 4. Despite not obtaining their point record in the last 6 seasons, they succeeded not repeating last season’s mistake this time around. Led by Edin Visca’s amazing performances, the right winger can be accounted for 19 goals and 13 assists, coach Okan Buruk’s team clinched the title in front of Trabzon. Their title race was generally backed by their great home performances. They could have guaranteed their title earlier on, but their busy schedule, which included a Europa League campaign, and the highest age average of the league forced them a lot during the season. With two defeats in a row, they kicked off the season real bad, but then the fans saw a 16-game unbeaten run which was ended by a city derby. After that, another 12-game undefeated streak enabled them to compete in a merciless title race. One of the key factors in winning the title was the performance of the backline. With Mert, Skrtel, Caicara, Epureanu and Clichy, who are all 30 years old or more, they were the fewest conceding team of the league with 10 clean sheets. The only disappointing thing was the early exit from the Turkish Cup, which helped them ease their busy schedule a little bit. However, they have improved their European Cups performances aas they saw the round of 16. And they could even get better as they are still alive in EL. It is obvious that the next season will be more difficult for them because of the pressure of saving their league title and CL’s group stage. At this point, coach Okan Buruk should bring more quality in and rejuvenate his team. Considering CL’s wealth, he will have enough resources to do all.
