Football Season Review

№13: Konyaspor

Konya are thankful for the late victories which enabled them to survive at the top level. In fact, they made a good start to the season, but then they had to see a coach change following a very poor run. During the whole season, they lacked creativity up-front. When they reached October, they were standing inside the European spots and the fans were very happy with the team’s performance, but then an unstoppable terrible run started with the home defeat against Yeni Malatya. In this period, the coach insisted to use a 442 formation which has not been effective with Bajic up front. Despite the poor run, he did not think about changing it. After recording only one victory in 14 fixtures, the board did not stand to keep on working with him. His successor Bulent Korkmaz struggled in the early fixtures. In particular, they did not do well with him on the road, but their survival was backed largely by the home run. At this point, Farouk Miya’s decisive goals, Jens Jonsson’s stubborn fight, the offensive performances of Hadziahmetovic and Omer Ali helped the coach collect enough points at home. When coach Bulent Korkmaz was appointed, some fans did not welcome him well, but he managed to earn the vote of confidence by keeping the team in the Super League, but he knows that the next season will be more difficult for them. In order not to face the same worries, he needs to bring an effective attacker and a creative play-maker. If he cannot give his squad more depth, his team will struggle a lot in 21-team busy schedule.
