Football Season Review

№17: Kayserispor

Despite the great efforts of coach Robert Prosinecki, Kayseri had to finish the season in the relegation zone, but the Turkish FA’s cancellation of relegations saved them this time around. When the season’s 1st part was completed, they were standing in the bottom place with only 10 points. During that period, they worked with three different coaches, but none of them could end the poor league run. In January, the board appointed coach Robert Prosinecki. At first the team struggled a little bit under his charge but then the coach started to know his players and they started to collect points. However, they failed to cope with the survival fight’s stress and could get only one point in the last four decisive fixtures. On the final match day, they could have got out of the danger zone, if they had scored a goal instead of conceding a late one against Trabzon. The biggest problem of Kayseri was not to have a steady line up. During the whole season, only four players featured in 25 or more fixtures as starters. Except a few players, there is a big difference in squad quality between them and most of their league rivals. The offence line was spurred by Pedro Henrique’s goals, but Bernard Mensah did a great job in both phases of the game. Besides defending well in the midfield, he scored 5 goals and served 8 assists. In term of next season, their president is expected to stick with the Croatian coach. It is a great advantage as he knows what the team need the most. Besides bringing some quality to the defence line and midifeld, it is a must to keep Mensah in the team.
