Football Season Review

№2: Trabzonspor

On the recent years, Trabzon have never been so close to win the title since their last triumph in 1983/84 season. At the end, it was a huge disappointment for the fans as they lost very unexpected points in the latest fixtures. At least, the Turkish Cup success should minimize their sadness. Spurred by Alexander Sörloth’s goals, with the striker ending as the league's top scorer with 24 goals, Trabzon gave the biggest challenge to the title holder Basaksehir. It could be said that they were the real cause of their title loss as they lost most of the points in fixtures in which they had taken the lead. At this point, personal mistakes of the backline cost them heavily in such situations. Crucial slip-ups in the last 4 home fixtures against Basaksehir, Ankaragucu, Antalya and Konya meant that something bad would be coming at the end of the season. Despite that, the campaign was memorable for the team as they held the best attack of the league with great performances by Sörloth, Sosa, Ekuban, Nwakaeme and Novak. While everything was going well, the board very surprisingly decided to part the company with coach Unal Karaman. According to some rumours, it was a political reason. After coach Huseyin Cimsir was appointed, they were unable to stretch a winning league run for a long time. Maybe, the board’s unexpected coach change decision made them lose the title. For the next season, they have to decide who is going to be the new coach. Then, the chosen one is not expected to make many changes, because the new season will kick off soon. However, some quality is highly needed for the backline.

Player of the Season: Alexander Sorloth
