Football Season Review

№11: Goztepe

Another season where Goztepe disappointed their fans a lot at the end. They are thankful for the season’s 1st part’s points which enabled them to survive at the top level. It is obvious that they were affected by a limited squad and its lack of quality. Under the charge of coach Tamer Tuna, they made a terrible start to the season and failed to score any goal in the early 4 fixtures. Even though they started to collect points, the board did not continue to work with him and he was replaced by coach Ilhan Palut. In fact, it was a risky decision as he was going to have his 1st experience in the Super League. Till March, Goztepe did a very good job and suffered only 2 defeats in 13 fixtures, but then things started to get worse. In particular, they were terrible following the pandemic break and collected only 2 points in 7 fixtures until they defeated Sivas at home on the final match day. Before the break, they were dreaming to push for the European spots, but they collected the fewest points in the table following the pandemic break. During the whole season, they were affected by injuries and suspensions a lot. This made the coach struggle to use his best line up. At this point, Soner Aydogdu, who has produced 5 goals and 7 assists during the whole season, attracted the fans’ attentions as one of the most consistent players. If the board decides to stick with the coach, he will build his own squad which is an advantage for him. Since he has suffered from the short squad a lot, he is sure to bring many players, but the quality is a must. If not, they could face the same problems again.

Player of the Season: Soner Aydogdu
