Football Season Review

№12: Genclerbirligi

It was a season where Genclerbirligi were never able to build a steady run following their return to the top level. Despite lack of strength in depth, they managed to survive after collecting some points in the latest fixtures. Once again, the offence line was spurred by Bogdan Stancu who has produced 14 goals and 5 assists. Except him, Giovanni Sio also did pretty well with 12 goals and 3 assists. Their survival was generally backed by their home performances and they struggled to defend well on the road as they were one of the most conceding teams. They did lots of slip-ups in the season’s 2nd part and could collect only 18 points. That is why they were one of the relegation candidates till the late fixtures. At this point, the attacking duo’s performance and calm, the determined attitude of coach Hamza Hamzaoglu enabled the team survive. In fact, the coach expected to do much better after he had replaced coach Mustafa Kaplan in November, but he did not build the squad. So it was all he could do. It is not clear whether the board will stick with coach Hamzaoglu or appoint a new coach. In any case, the quality of the team should be improved a lot. Especially, the backline should be changed completely. A couple of new offensive faces would be good. Otherwise, the capital city side are likely facing the same problems in the next season.

Player of the Season: Bogdan Stancu
