Stadium | St Mary's Stadium (opened 2001) Capacity: 32,505 Pitch Size: 105m x 68m Southampton played their home games at The Dell until 2001 when they moved to St Mary's. Due to the location of the latter and the lack of options to expand what was a cramped stadium, the club had talked up a move for some time. The move was marketed as The Saints returning home as prior to becoming Southampton FC, they were St Mary's Church Young Men's Association. St Mary's is an enclosed, bowl style stadium. |
Recent History | Southampton's Premier League experience has seen them looking over their shoulder to avoid relegation as opposed to challenging for the top places. A highlight was 2002/03 when they ended the campaign in 8th and made the FA Cup final only to lose to Arsenal. The following season they would be relegated under Harry Redknapp. By 2009 the club was in financial trouble and received a 10 point penalty after going into administration. Given that relegation was already certain, the penalty applied to the upcoming season in League One. Better news would come the following season as Southampton won the Football League trophy and the season after that secured promotion to The Championship. More success would come in 2011/12 with promotion to the Premier League. Southampton have became renowned for selling players who go on to play for the very best. Some of those include Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), Virgil Van Dyke (Liverpool), Dejan Lovren (Liverpool), Victor Wanyama (Tottenham via Celtic), Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain (Liverpool via Arsenal), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), Morgan Schneiderlin (Everton), Dusan Tadic (Ajax), Gareth Bale (Real Madrid via Tottenham), Sadio Mane (Liverpool) & Theo Walcott (Everton via Arsenal). Having continued to sell their best assets, disappointment would come in 2022/23 with relegation back to The Championship. |
