Football Season Review

№4: Birmingham City

Birmingham City failed to make an immediate return to the Premier League, losing in the play-off semi-finals to Blackpool. It should go down as a successful season for Chris Hughton but failure to return to the top flight could have a catastrophic effect on the club’s financial position. The Blues finished 4th after enjoying a Europa League run along with promising performances in the League Cup and FA Cup. They had an incredible home record losing just once in the league at St Andrew’s. Their defence, led by Curtis Davies, was incredibly strong while the midfield also function with Chris Burke impressing on his first season at the club. Marlon King and Nikola Zigic also hit it off in attack. Too many games in the end did for the club with Hughton forced to chop and change his starting eleven to wave away fatigue. Injuries to key players such as Steven Caldwell for the last few games of the season also hindered Hughton. The manager has been linked with a move away from the club and it will be interesting to see how many players the club can keep. If many stay, promotion could still be a possibly next term.
