Football Season Review

№24: Doncaster Rovers

Doncaster were relegated back to League 1 after a disastrous campaign. Starting under Sean O’Driscoll the club fell apart after he left and was replaced by Dean Saunders. Agent Willie McKay also arrived and a controversial policy where Premier League cast-offs arrived to resurrect their careers backfired spectacularly. The club lost the team spirit that had allowed them to survive as players came and went as they pleased. The biggest departure was probably not McKay related as leading scorer Billy Sharp upped ship to join Southampton. The club never replaced him despite El Hadji Diouf, Freddie Piquionne Marc Antoine Fortune all having time at the Keepmoat Stadium. Just 43 goals all season tells its own story as Doncaster were relegated with just 36 points, 12 from safety. They won just eight matches all season and just four at home. Saunders will have to completely rebuild the club in the summer but even then it is difficult to see how they will come back at the first time of asking.
