Football Season Review

№18: Peterborough United

Peterborough United will have been very satisfied with their season's work having secured their Championship status for a second consecutive season. The 2011 League One playoff winners made a very strong start to the 2011/12 campaign, with Posh even looking dark horses for a playoff charge at one stage. A remarkable 7-1 home victory over East Anglian neighbours Ipswich Town was the stand-out result for Darren Ferguson's men, giving them the self-belief to tackle the division from an early stage. United's style of football was easy on the eye and expansive, particularly at London Road where the side took the scalp of a number of top half sides. The midfield duo of captain, Grant McCann and winger George Boyd was creative and yielded a number of goals and assists alike. At the back Peterborough remained rather porous, leaking goals at inopportune moments. In fact it was their poor defensive record that had Posh looking over their shoulder in the second half of the season when their form eluded them. But the virtual ever-presence of centre back Gabriel Zakuani provided a calming influence. The powerful Congolese stopper played through the pain barrier on a number of occasions and typified the spirit throughout Darren Ferguson's side to secure Championship football for 2012/13.
