Football Season Review

№21: Bolton Wanderers

Bolton somehow survived against relegation to League One, a place that seemed inevitable for large periods of the campaign. They stayed up after winning 3-2 at home to Nottingham Forest on the final day of a season that had them bottom, well adrift of anyone else, with two months of the season played. The big problem for Wanderers was the complete lack of investment. Other than a few free transfers and loans it was the same side that won promotion from League One. And they also sold Gary Madine to Cardiff midway through the campaign to weaken them further. Their side really lacked class but they were able to compete as the players they did have were experienced at this level and they were especially well managed by Phil Parkinson. Adam Le Fondre scored the goals they needed at the right time but it was not easy to select a Bolton player of the campaign as no-one stood out in particular. Wanderers really do need new signings over the summer otherwise it looks like being a long, hard season. But for now they can rejoice in something of a minor miracle staying in this division.
