Football Season Review

№15: Sheffield Wednesday

After two straight play-off campaigns, this season has to go down as a massive disappointment for Sheffield Wednesday. The Owls were off colour throughout with Carlos Carvalhal paying with his job midway through the season. Jos Luhukay was hardly a resounding success as his replacement but at least offered some optimism late on in the campaign. Wednesday's big issue this season was injuries. They had a massive injury crisis all season and were severely depleted. Fernando Forestieri was the biggest loss, missing much of the season, while Tom Lees, Keiren Westwood, Gary Hooper, Sam Hutchinson, Kieran Lee and Barry Bannan were also badly missed at stages of the season. Wednesday's squad appears to be overloaded with attacking players of similar styles and certain expensive players such as Jordan Rhodes failed to deliver this season. You sense there needs to be a certain amount of transfer activity both ways over the course of the summer. Yet there does not need to be too much with Wednesday sure to be a force should their injury situation improve in the next season. There was hardly an overload of players competing for the player of the year award but Adam Reach's overall consistency, not to mention versatility, means he took that this season.
