Football Season Review

№7: Preston North End

In the end, Preston just missed out on a play-off spot but they can be particularly pleased with the season they have had. Finishing 7th in his first season at Deepdale, Alex Neil will be content, proving that not only are his side now firmly accomplished at this level, but he is also an excellent manager in the Championship having had an average time at Norwich City. North End were a gritty side throughout, proving to be very difficult to beat thanks largely to their team spirit and ability to play as a team. There were always thereabouts but it was not until the closing stages where they appeared as if they may have half a chance of the play-offs. The fact they did not make the top six is certainly not something to be ashamed or disappointed about. Preston lost Jordan Hugill to West Ham midway through the season but did not allow it to effect them. Instead Sean Maguire really came to the fore as he impressed in his first season in English football. Preston already appear to be in the mood for next season with the astute arrival of Ryan Ledson from Oxford. They are unlikely to spend big bucks but it should be a squad that by and large stays together. With that in mind they will fancy their chances of another push next year. Summing up a strong side, Alan Browne was player of the season thanks to some solid midfield displays while also showing notable improvement on recent campaigns.
