Football Season Review

№9: Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic eventually adapted well to life back in the English second tier after initially looking like they would struggle at the wrong end of the table. Chris Powell's men suffered terribly in front of their own fans at The Valley and in the opening third of the campaign their inconsistency saw them languishing in the lower reaches of the table. However, an impressive turnaround both home and away saw the Addicks climb into the top half of the table free from relegation fears. Charlton even had an outside chance of sneaking into the playoffs with only a handful of games remaining, but the task was just beyond them. Powell has developed a largely youthful and exuberant squad mixed with a sprinkling of experience. There is plenty of talent in the Addicks midfield, with the likes of Johnnie Jackson, Dale Stephens and Bradley Pritchard all standing up well to the task of Championship football. Full back, Chris Solly was a virtual ever-present in the Charlton back four with the Welsh academy graduate clearly destined for bigger and better things in the coming years. Goals in the final third were somewhat harder to come by, with Powell trying numerous strike combinations over the course of the campaign. Injuries to Danny Haynes and Yann Kermorgant didn't help, while veterans such as Ricardo Fuller and Rob Hulse failed to set the world alight. Fresh attacking impetus will be required in the transfer market this summer.
