Football Season Review

№20: Millwall

A season that promised so much eventually fizzled out, with Millwall eventually grateful to avoid relegation to League One. Kenny Jackett's men looked set to challenge on two fronts - a playoff push in the league and an FA Cup challenge on the side. The Lions made it to the semi-finals of the cup, before falling at Wembley and their league form deteriorated almost immediately after being dumped out on the big stage. The New Den, which is stereotypically a fortress for Millwall, proved less so this season than others having tasted defeat 11 times on home soil - the joint-highest figure in the league along with bottom club Bristol City. Players that started the season well faded as the season went on with the likes of Liam Trotter and Nadjim Abdou failing to reach the early standards they had set themselves. A few masterful loan signings shored up the Lions' defence with Mark Beevers and Shane Lowry the stand-out performers in the back line. However, keeper David Forde has to come in for particular praise with the stopper establishing himself as a regular both in the Millwall side and the Republic of Ireland setup. His shot-stopping abilities are second to none at this level. After a disappointing end to the season it was decided that Jackett would part ways with the club following more than six years at the helm. A new manager could breathe new life into the group for 2013-14.
