Football Season Review

№14: Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town endured another roller-coaster season in 2012-13, however the Blues can look to next term with renewed optimism after a promising second half to the campaign that saw them steer clear of the relegation zone. Under Paul Jewell, Town slumped to the foot of the table and were already five points adrift when the axe fell on the former Wigan and Bradford chief. Mick McCarthy's appointment steadied the ship, with the likeable Yorkshireman greatly improving Town's defensive backbone that has been all too brittle in the last few seasons. Centre backs, Tommy Smith and Luke Chambers formed an outstanding partnership, resulting in a run of seven clean sheets in eight matches between February and April. Ipswich eventually finished 14th and free from relegation concerns on the final day of the season. However, McCarthy knows he has work to do in other areas of the squad if they are to maintain their form and challenge the top six next season. A reliable goalscorer and midfield creativity will surely be topping the list of summer transfer requirements. However, competing with clubs with parachute payments for out-of-contract players is not going to be easy.
